Emissions Solutions
Over the next six years, new lower emission Tier 4 and Stage IV engines will have significant impact on all future generations of off-road machines.

What is the background? By our estimates, between 10,000 and 15,000 different machines will need to be redesigned. Due to the complexity of meeting these regulations, the vehicle manufacturer is entering the most challenging phase of the emissions regulation cycle. Sauer-Danfoss has been diligently working on the technologies and performance variables related to Emission Certification. And we’re prepared to partner with you – right now – to update your machine design – for greater productivity, using less energy.
What does Interim Tier 4/Stage III B mean? To be compliant with emissions regulations for the ‘Interim’ level; Particulate Matter (PM) will be reduced by 90%, and the Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) will be reduced by 50%. For Final Tier 4/State IV, both PM and NOx will be reduced to almost zero.
In order to meet the required emission regulations, a number of engine characteristics will be affected. For starters, engine application operating speeds and speed bands will be reduced. Engine power levels and torque will change. Along with all this, there will be greater system heat rejection. What does this mean to vehicle performance? Several things including the following:
- Available hydraulic flow reduced by about 10 percent.
- Net vehicle power output reduced by 5-10 percent.
- Heat rejected to the environment increased 10-15 percent.
- Available installation space around the engine will be reduced.
How can we help? At Sauer-Danfoss, our Global Emissions Team has been taking a vehicle-by-vehicle approach to assess and analyze the technologies which may be employed to address the changes in flow and power output, heat rejection, and installation space.
We are performing lab tests, conducting dynamic simulations, evaluating proof-of-concept systems, and validating and documenting how best to produce more efficient, productive machines. Always focused on providing solutions for propel, work, control and vehicle management functions, we’re ready to integrate best-in-class products to meet the significant challenges posed by the arrival of Tier 4 and Stage IV. Sauer-Danfoss is ready to be your emission solutions partner.
